What is Shingles?
Shingles is a viral infection characterised by a painful rash on the skin.
You can only get shingles after you have already had chickenpox. Shingles is not a new infection but rather a new outbreak of a previous chickenpox infection.
After you have had chickenpox, the varicella zoster virus stays in your nerve cells. The virus can be dormant (inactive) for many years.
If the virus becomes active again, it typically presents as shingles.
People over the age of 50 are most at risk. It is a common health condition in older people, especially if you are over 80. Shingles is also more common in people with a poor immune system resulting from other medical conditions. The risk of getting shingles and neurological complications increases with age.
Government funded vaccines
Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect you from serious disease caused by shingles.
2 doses of the Shingrix® zoster vaccine is free for all adults over the age of 65, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults over the age of 50 and for adults with specified medical risk conditions over the age of 18. It is important to receive both doses for the best protection.
